Approximately 900 visitors were left stranded in the vicinity of the world-famous archaeological site of the iconic Peruvian landmark this week, according to government officials.
This situation arose because the local railway ceased operations due to local demonstrations. Demonstrators had set obstructive boulders along the railway route, preventing rail transit.
Cause of the Disruption
The protest erupted recently following the operating permit lapsed for the transport operator that transports tourists from Aguas Calientes and the access point of the 15th-century Inca citadel.
Protesters claim that decisions are being made opaquely and impartiality in selecting a new the tourist bus operator. They are calling for more community input in this key economic sector.
Tourist Assistance
Tourism officials reported that more than 1,400 tourists had been safely removed earlier this week, however an estimated nearly a thousand were left behind in Aguas Calientes.
In addition to the rock obstructions, demonstrators also disturbed part of the train tracks, damaging the stability of the tracks and hindered the removal of tourists.
Travelers attempted walking out due to the unrest.
Authorities continue efforts to clear the tracks and ensure the safe passage of all stranded tourists.
