Called “a national calamity,” prosecutors laid out a disturbing narrative of the alleged murder of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

A Planned Attack

According to the district attorney’s office, Tyler Robinson grew consumed by animosity for Kirk and his political views. Authorities claim Robinson planned the murder in just over a week after discovering Kirk would be speaking at Utah Valley University.

Messages Uncover Admission

The state assert Robinson dispatched his roommate texts admitting to the murder. In a particular conversation, Robinson reportedly stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”

“Erase this exchange,” Robinson allegedly texted in a later message.

Murder Weapon Details

Investigators say a bolt-action rifle belonging to Robinson’s grandparent was employed in the killing. The weapon was subsequently discovered in a adjacent field concealed in a towel.

Three bullets were found with the weapon, each marked with inflammatory messages.

Political Reasons

Based on testimony from Robinson’s mother, the suspect had recently become increasingly ideological and begun tilting more to the left, embracing LGBTQ+ rights.

The accused had also begun seeing his housemate, a man who was transitioning, which allegedly caused conflict within his household.

Apprehension and Charges

The suspect was taken into custody on September 12 and accused with first-degree murder. Prosecutors announced they will seek the death penalty.

Authorities indicate Robinson’s own parent recognized him from media images of the shooter and contacted authorities.

Court Hearings

The suspect had an first hearing on Tuesday, with a waiver hearing set for September 29.

The state emphasized that the information presented are only allegations at this stage and recognized the grief of Kirk’s family.

“Like all murders, the senseless ending of Charlie Kirk’s life has devastated the lives of those he loved,” stated the prosecutor.
